Spinnova is trying to take over the world with its environmentally friendly fiber

Spinnova is a startup company founded in 2015. The innovation of Spinnova is a new type of cellulose-based fiber that is made from pulp and waste streams. The fiber is made without using any harmful chemicals and the only byproduct in the process is water.

– We are developing the most sustainable fiber for textile industry. It’s really exciting to try and do something that has never been done before, says Pasi Selenius, who works as the Development Manager at Spinnova.

– It’s a pretty amazing innovation actually. I think that the thing that excites me the most is that it’s about paying it forward to the environment, says Application Manager Maree Hamilton.

Versatile materials designed for different purposes

What’s really promising about the product is that different customers can have the fiber manufactured to suit their personal needs.

– We are working with a number of different categories and optimizing our material for various applications, Hamilton tells.

What does the future hold?

“It’s been an interesting journey from the very beginning to where we are today. We started from scratch and now we have a pilot machine running. It’s unbelievable, really.”

As for the future, the company already has big goals and ambitions.

– I hope our fiber will be used by big brands and this way people all over the world will use clothes made from it, Selenius says.

Maree Hamilton was actually so convinced about Spinnova that she decided to move to Finland from New Zealand.

– I moved 17,000 kilometers to be here and turned my whole life upside down. This is one of the most exciting, challenging and amazing things I have ever done, she concludes.
